When I opened the atelier in 2014 I decided we would only work in recycled gold. It was the simplest choice I made that year, and the one clients ask about most.
What recycled gold is
Gold doesn’t wear out. Old jewellery and the scrap from our own benches are melted, refined back to pure gold by a Dubai refiner that follows the DMCC rules for responsible sourcing, then alloyed again into 18ct yellow, rose and white. Once refined, it is chemically identical to newly mined gold.
Why it matters
Mining new gold moves enormous amounts of earth and water for very little metal. There is already more gold above ground than we could use in many lifetimes. Using it again costs us a little more, and it is the only way we want to work.
Traceable stones
- Every diamond comes with a record of its mine, cutter and route to us.
- Every diamond is bought under the Kimberley Process and System of Warranties, most of them through the Dubai Diamond Exchange.
- Coloured stones come from a small number of dealers we have bought from for years.
If we can’t say where a stone came from, we don’t set it.
Your own gold
If you bring us old jewellery, we can refine it and credit it against a new piece, or, where there is enough, melt and cast your gold separately. Our Heirloom page explains how.
