Gulf offshore supply vessels
Four platform supply vessels converted to diesel-electric propulsion with batteries, using eight DNV-approved motors built in Jebel Ali.
The result
- less fuel burned
- 22%
- Average across the four vessels
- less CO₂ a year
- 6,800 t
- Fleet total, operator’s figures
- propulsion motors
- 8
- 1.8 MW each, water-cooled
- weeks in dry dock
- 6
- Per vessel, as planned
The challenge
The operator’s four supply vessels spent much of their time holding position beside offshore platforms in the Gulf, with diesel engines running far below their efficient load.
Each conversion had to fit inside a six-week dry dock slot, and the motors had to fit the existing shaft lines and engine room openings.
What we did
-
Engineering
3D scans of each engine room and a motor designed to pass through the existing hatch.
-
Motors
Eight 1.8 MW water-cooled propulsion motors, built and type-tested in Jebel Ali.
-
Installation
Our marine team on board throughout each dry dock, working with the yard.
-
Sea trials
Trials and DNV survey for each vessel, then a remote monitoring link to Jebel Ali.

Norvik’s marine engineers lived in the dry dock with us for six weeks. Fuel use across the four ships is down by more than a fifth.
