Taster session

Two hours on the wheel for complete beginners. You’ll throw two or three pieces, pick a glaze, and collect them three weeks later.

A small group at pottery wheels

What you’ll do

The taster is where most people start, and where plenty of people decide they want to keep going. There are eight wheels and never more than eight people, with Ailsa or Clara teaching and walking round the whole time.

We start at the big table with a coffee and a bun while you watch a cup being made from start to finish. Then you’re on the wheel: wedging, centring, opening and pulling up the walls. Most people centre their first lump of clay within half an hour. Keep your two or three favourite pieces, choose one of our four house glazes (cobalt, celadon, speckled oat or tenmoku), and we do the rest.

For ages 14 and up; 14 and 15 year olds come with a paying adult.

Questions about the taster session

I’ve never touched clay. Is that OK?

That’s exactly who the taster is for. Nobody expects a perfect cup; most people surprise themselves.

What should I wear?

Clothes you don’t mind getting muddy and short or rolled-up sleeves. We have aprons, but clay gets everywhere. Take rings and watches off before you start.

Can I come on my own?

Yes. About half our tasters are people on their own, and the big table makes it easy to chat.

Can I move my date?

Yes, free of charge up to 48 hours before. Inside 48 hours we can move you once if another place is free.

Took my dad to a taster session for his birthday. He’s now bought his own wheel.
