Six-week wheel course

One evening a week for six weeks, in a group of eight. By the end you’ll throw, trim and glaze a set of cups or bowls you’ll actually use.

What you’ll do

The course is for people who’ve done a taster, or who want to skip straight to the proper thing. Each evening is two and a half hours with Ailsa, building one skill on the last: centring until it’s second nature, then cylinders, bowls, trimming feet, handles, and finally glazing.

Your fee covers a 12.5 kg bag of clay, all glazes and both firings for everything you make, plus a shelf in the studio for the six weeks. Course students can also use the studio free on Sunday evenings from 17:30 to 19:30 to practise.

Miss a week and you can catch up in open studio, with a teacher on hand.

How it goes

  1. Weeks 1–2: centring and cylinders

The foundations. Most people find their rhythm by the end of week two.

  2. Weeks 3–4: bowls, trimming and handles

Shape a set, then turn feet and pull handles on last week’s pieces.

  3. Week 5: glazing

Dipping, pouring, wax resist and layering, with all eight house glazes.

  4. Week 6: finishing and review

Final throws, a look at everyone’s work, and what to try next.

Questions about the six-week wheel course

Do I need to have done a taster first?

No, but it helps. If you haven’t, Ailsa will spend a little extra time with you in week one.

What if I miss an evening?

Come to open studio on a Sunday evening to catch up. Clara will be there to help.

How much will I make?

Most people take home eight to fifteen finished pieces. The clay in your fee is enough for plenty of practice too.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, in full up to 14 days before the first evening. After that the place is yours, though you can pass it to a friend.
