Staff Engineer, Data

Lead the data side of our biggest engagements and grow the practice in our Riyadh office.

About the role

Our data work has grown from a few pipelines to a practice of twelve engineers across Riyadh and Dubai. We need a staff engineer to set its technical direction: how we design event streams, warehouses and the data products our clients build on them.

You’ll spend about half your time on a client engagement, often the data platform behind a modernisation, and half across the practice: reviewing designs, coaching senior engineers and helping us decide which work to take on.

You’ll work from our office on King Fahd Road at least two days a week, with travel to clients in Saudi Arabia and the UAE roughly once a month.

The work and you

  • What you’ll do

A typical month, though no two engagements are the same.

    • Set the architecture for data platforms on our largest engagements
    • Coach and review the work of senior data engineers
    • Help scope and estimate new data work with clients
    • Write and talk about what we learn, inside and outside Kestrel
    • Hire and onboard engineers for the Riyadh data team
  • What you’ll bring

If you meet most of these, please apply. We’d rather hear from you than not.

    • Ten or more years in data or backend engineering
    • Deep experience with streaming (Kafka or similar) and a modern warehouse
    • Strong SQL and Python, and one of Java, Kotlin or Scala
    • Experience leading technical decisions across several teams
    • Fluent English; Arabic is helpful but not required
